Cultural Competency Manager Chosen for Health Leadership Award

Cathy Romeo, VNA Care Network & Hospice’s Cultural Competency Program manager, recently received the 2009 Deborah Blumer Community Health Leadership Award from the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation.

Romeo was honored for her work addressing racial and ethnic health disparities and improving the cultural competency of area health providers. (She's pictured with Martin D. Cohen, president and CEO of the Foundation.)

As VNA Care Network & Hospice’s Cultural Competency Program manager, Romeo offers workshops, consultation services, and resources across Eastern and Central Massachusetts. The program promotes cross-cultural communication, awareness, sensitivity, and understanding between and among health care professionals and the patients they serve.

Romeo’s work in MetroWest communities includes cultural competency training for senior service providers at councils on aging, senior centers, and MetroWest Regional SHINE (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders) Program. This initiative was made possible by grants from the MetroWest Community Health Care Foundation, which develops and supports programs that have a positive impact on the health of residents in Ashland, Bellingham, Dover, Framingham, Franklin, Holliston, Hopedale, Hopkinton, Hudson, Marlborough, Medfield, Medway, Mendon, Milford, Millis, Natick, Needham, Norfolk, Northborough, Sherborn, Southborough, Sudbury, Wayland, Wellesley, and Westborough.

Romeo has trained over 2,000 health care professionals including VNA Care Network & Hospice’s home health care, hospice, and wellness professionals.
