Myra L. Herrick of Beverly recently received the 2001 Excellence and Outstanding Achievement Award in the category of Home Health Care Champion by the Home and Health Care Association of Massachusetts.

Herrick was recognized for more than 20 years of volunteer service with VNA Care Network and her role in supporting nonprofit home health care in Massachusetts. Home health care, including nursing, rehabilitation therapy, medical social work, and home care aide support, helps people cope with illness and injury while continuing to live in their own homes.

"Myra's perseverance and tenacity in facing challenges and fighting for elders' rights, her commitment to the value of home health care, and her work helping to obtain funding for services provided at home is exemplary," said Jane Woodbury, vice president of business and fund development for VNA Care Network, who nominated Herrick for the award. "Home health care is fortunate to have such a supporter and advocate."

Herrick has volunteered on numerous boards and committees at VNA Care Network including a term as president of the board of directors and chair of the legislative committee. Although Herrick has retired from the board of directors, she continues to be active in VNA Care Network's fundraising and legislative activities and serves as an advocate for patients' rights, elder services, and improvement in Medicaid reimbursement of home health care services.

In addition to her volunteer work with VNA Care Network, Herrick also serves as president of the board for Senior Care and is involved with the Massachusetts Medical Society/Senior and Physician Health Care Collaborative.
