VNA Care Network & Hospice recently launched a $1.5 million fundraising campaign to expand health care options for the terminally ill.

The agency will renovate the Rose Monahan Hospice Home, formerly the Hospice Residence on Coes Pond, in Worcester to meet state licensing requirements to become an inpatient hospice care facility. The residence is currently a homelike place for those facing a terminal illness to live and receive pain and symptom management and other health, emotional, practical and spiritual support services. By becoming an inpatient hospice facility, the Rose Monahan Hospice Home will be able to provide more complex care that is usually available only in hospitals.

Among the other changes will be the addition of three shifts of registered nurses to care for acutely ill, medically complex patients," said Karen H. Green, RN, president and CEO of VNA Care Network & Hospice.

The fundraising campaign will also establish a patient care fund for expenses not covered by insurance such as routine maintenance of the building and grounds, subsidized or free care for those in need, and bereavement counseling for families.

The Rose Monahan Hospice Home opened on Sept. 9, 1997, as the Hospice Residence on Coes Pond and has served more than 1,000 families. Last year more than 150 patients from younger than one year to over 85 years called the house their home.

The campaign is chaired by Charlie and Lenny Monahan of Worcester. Charlie's mother, Rose, lived at the residence in 2005, and the home was recently renamed after her to recognize the family's decades of support of hospice and home health care. Charlie Monhan is a member of the VNA Care Network Foundation Board of Directors, and Lenny serves on the board of VNA Care Advantage, part of VNA Care Network.
