VNA Care Hospice, part of VNA Care Network, recently celebrated the fifth anniversary of the Hospice on Coes Pond (now the Rose Monahan Hospice Home) with a benefit at Mechanics Hall, Worcester.
The Hospice on Coes Pond in Worcester is one of three hospice residences for the terminally ill operated by VNA Care Hospice. The residences offer home-like environments for the terminally ill to live and receive pain and symptom management and other hospice services. VNA Care Hospice's residences also include Chilton House in Cambridge and the Tippett Home in Needham.
Dr. Brownell H. Wheeler Jr. of University of Massachusetts Medical School was among the featured speakers. He cited VNA Care Hospice's accomplishment of being the first home health agency in Massachusetts to receive Medicare hospice certification and called the Hospice on Coes Pond "a priceless resource for the community."
VNA Care Network President and CEO Karen H. Green presented volunteer recognition awards to Valerie S. Loring and Robin F. Spaulding (pictured above, left to right, with Mary Whalen, vice president of hospice, at far right) for their instrumental roles in establishing the Hospice on Coes Pond. Green was assisted during the ceremony by Doreen C. Harper, Ph.D., C.S., A.N.T., F.A.A.N., dean/professor of the UMass-Worcester Graduate School of Nursing, and Rosemarie Hayes, vice president and chief nursing officer of Saint Vincent Hospital. State Senator Harriette L. Chandler honored Loring and Spaulding with citations from the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for their volunteer contributions.
Eric Schultz, CEO of Fallon Community Health Plan, served as master of ceremonies for the benefit. Joining him at the podium were Rabbi Seth L. Bernstein, Reverend Dr. Paul D. Kennedy and Dr. Will Miller, author of Refrigerator Rights: Creating Essential Relationships.
Corporate sponsors for the event were Fallon Community Health Plan and Saint Vincent Hospital, both Corporate Pacesetters, and Hospice Pharmacia, a Corporate Leader.
