North Shore residents coping with a terminal illness have a new resource with the expansion of VNA Care Hospice, part of VNA Care Network, from Central Massachusetts, MetroWest, Cambridge, and Dedham area communities.

"By bringing hospice to the North Shore, we're able to give people facing a life-threatening illness more options and continuity of care," said Mary Whalen, vice president of hospice.

WIDE RANGE OF SERVICES FOR THOSE WITH A LIFE-THREATENING ILLNESS

VNA Care Network has offered home-based health care in Eastern and Central Massachusetts for more than 100 years. In addition to nursing, rehabilitation therapy, home care aide support, and medical social work, patients facing a life-threatening illness may continue to live at home with specialized services such as oncology and infusion therapy.

Individuals who are receiving treatment for life-limiting diseases or who are not ready for hospice frequently have concerns that can't be met in a traditional home health care environment. VNA Care Network's Care Choices program utilizes clinicians' expertise in pain and symptom management to keep patients comfortable and improve quality of life.

If an illness becomes terminal, VNA Care Hospice, part of VNA Care Network, provides a combination of physical, emotional, spiritual, and bereavement support to allow adult and pediatric patients and their loved ones to live as fully as possible. Hospice teams consist of nurses, physicians, social workers, volunteers, home care aides, chaplains, and bereavement counselors. Clinical specialists, nutritionists, and rehabilitation therapists are available if needed.

Hospice fulfills many patients' desires to remain at home during their illness. If living at home is no longer possible, VNA Care Hospice offers homelike hospice residences in Cambridge, Needham, and Worcester, as well as care at assisted living, extended care, and community residences.
