Visiting Nurse Associations of America named Carol Jones, RN, BSN, CWOCN, senior enterostomal therapist for VNA Care Network, as Clinician of the Year for 2002.
Jones was one of four individuals honored at VNAA's annual meeting in April for their contributions to home health care. The Clinician of the Year Award is presented to a Visiting Nurse employee "whose achievements and contributions have enriched the individual's agency, the lives of her patients, and the image of the profession."
As senior enterostomal therapist, Jones oversees VNA Care Network's Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Program in Eastern and Central Massachusetts. Jones is responsible for developing and implementing standards of care to decrease wound care patients' infections and hospitalizations, offering educational programs for staff, and monitoring the progress of every wound care patient.
As part of her acceptance, Jones said, "I'm incredibly honored to have the work that I do here recognized. ...I think it's a privilege to be allowed into the most vulnerable, hurting parts of peoples' lives and to help bring healing and wholeness to them."
Colleagues cite Jones' clinical expertise and ability to connect with people among her strengths. Jones takes a holistic approach to care, tailoring treatment plans not just to medical problems, but also to patients' lifestyles and feelings about their health.
Paula Schultz, regional clinical director and Jones' supervisor, said, "(Carol's) role as a caregiver, mentor, and educator has done a wonderful job in developing a quality wound management program."
