Communicating Across Boundaries: Cultural Competency Training Workshops
VNA Care Network & Hospice's Culturally Competent Care: Communicating Across Cultural Boundaries workshops have helped thousands of individuals improve their cultural competence. The curriculum is adaptable to meet the needs of diverse groups, including elder service providers, home care and hospital clinicians, hospice and other end-of-life care providers, mental health professionals, tobacco treatment specialists, university health service providers and educators, and public health and social workers.
Each cultural competency workshop is:

A professional educational training intervention

Designed to improve the cultural competency of health and human service providers who are working with diverse populations

Based on the nationally recognized National Asian Women's Health Organization (NAWHO) curriculum recommended for replication by the federal Centers for Disease Control and the National Institutes of Health
Training goals of the complete curriculum are to:

Increase understanding of culture and cultural competency in the context of health and human service care

Increase health care providers' knowledge of potential belief systems and barriers that diverse populations may face in accessing health and human services

Provide culturally competent strategies for communication with and outreach to diverse population groups

Identify resources for furthering individual and organizational cultural competency
The curriculum, depending on time allowances, includes:

An interactive discussion on culture and cultural competency

"Beliefs and Barriers" (a panel discussion with representatives from culturally diverse populations specific to the training service area)

Future steps and strategies
